how do i clean my redwood deck and how should it be stained?

Nancy W asked:

it was power washed but still has algea or mildew on it and the wood is a little gray. does it need a brightner? The fellow who cleaned it power washed it with plain hot water. On protecting and sealing the deck to protect it from further UV or water damage – i know not to use a clear stain – but does anyone have a recommendation for a specific brand and type? i don’t want the deck to look fake and “painted” too. Cabot has this SPF deck finisher, but don’t know if that’s a good product or not. please help!! (and soon – we have to call our deck guy back tomorrow)

Cleaning pollen off of a metal roof. Are there any tools to scour without getting on a wet roof?

Bluesbooze asked:

I have a metal roof only 3 year old. There is a buildup of pine pollen and the yellow added to my red roof makes it look greenish. Obviously I cannot get on the roof while wet, without killing myself, so my question really is, is there a tool like a brush on a long light handle out there or is there a good way to clean the roof without getting on it while wet

Is this a good idea for resurfacing a cedar deck?

Don P asked:

I have a fairly large cedar deck with 5/4” boards that were ruined by a putz I hired to stain it. He used a high-power pressure washer on it & tore up the wood. Of course I fired the guy and stained it myself. (Olympic Maximum semi-transparent “waterproof” stain). The stain has come up, leaving bare wood, from where all the gouges, etc. are.

I am considering turning the boards over and planing the new surface down by about 1/16 – 1/8 inch to clean them up. Does this sound like a reasonable solution? Would it make the boards too thin, or is there another reason I shouldn’t do this? The only other alternative I see is to buy all new wood, and that is just too expensive right now.

Thanks for your advice!

I’ll be using bleach for the siding of the house. If I ask at Home Depot or Lowe’s they will just try to sell me something. Wasn’t sure if the bleach would harm the wood.
