Is this a good idea for resurfacing a cedar deck?

Don P asked:

I have a fairly large cedar deck with 5/4” boards that were ruined by a putz I hired to stain it. He used a high-power pressure washer on it & tore up the wood. Of course I fired the guy and stained it myself. (Olympic Maximum semi-transparent “waterproof” stain). The stain has come up, leaving bare wood, from where all the gouges, etc. are.

I am considering turning the boards over and planing the new surface down by about 1/16 – 1/8 inch to clean them up. Does this sound like a reasonable solution? Would it make the boards too thin, or is there another reason I shouldn’t do this? The only other alternative I see is to buy all new wood, and that is just too expensive right now.

Thanks for your advice!

I think that’s a good ideal I think the boards would still be strong enough as long as your floor joist are at 16″. Good luck

yeah, turnning the boards is good, forget the other crap, use HELMSMAN EXTERIOR POLYURETHANE.

1/16 to an 1/8 you should be fine that’s on the assumption that your joists are 16″ on center or less
