What can I do about a splintered deck?

Bev T asked:

My deck is splintered due to cleaning with bleach and/or power spray. Hand sanding seems like a very big job. I there any other way to smooth out the wood?

Splintered wood on a deck is most likely the result of a high pressure power washer. This tends to happen with cedar and other soft woods. You can rent floor finishing sanders like those used by professional tradesman or you can hire a wood floor refinishing company to do this for you.The sanding machines can be large and heavy and are best utilized in experienced hands. If it’s not too bad you may want to leave it and let it wear normally.

If your shure that sanding (what you’re calling “splintering”) will solve the problem, then countersink the nails or screws and hit the deck with a floor sander. Use the highest grit that’ll work….start with like #100 or #125.

Depending upon the severity of the splintering, you may be able to sand it all out with a drum or floor sander. But unless you have any experience with these types of tools, I recommend you hire someone to do the job for you. Be sure to treat the deck with a UV inhibitive coating at least once every two years once you’ve repaired/replaced the affected areas. Also, be careful not to blast off these coatings when power washing. It’s better to save the power washer for prep work on a new coat of finish.
